This coming Sunday we are looking at a passage of Scripture (John 1:43-51) that tells the story of Nathanael meeting Jesus for the first time. His friend tells him that he has found the long-awaited Messiah and it is Jesus who comes from Nazareth. Nathanael is really skeptical that anything good could come from Nazareth and besides the Old Testament said the Messiah would come from Bethlehem. So his friend, Philip, instead of trying to argue or reason with him just invites him to “Come and see” Jesus.
Read the text and you will see what happens as a result or come this Sunday and hear about it more directly.
The psalmist in the Old Testament makes a similar invitation to everyone, “Come and see what God has done: he is awesome in his deeds toward the children of man.”
That is one of the simplest invitations you can give to anyone. You don’t have to be a bible scholar or be able to answer everyone’s questions about Jesus. If Jesus has been important in your life, you simply invite people to “come and see”. Invite them to the Alpha program where they came come and ask questions. Or there are many good books that a person can read. Or invite them to a cup of coffee with me—I would gladly sit down and spend time in conversation with anyone who is looking.
And that is why it is important to be PRAYING FOR ONE. Again, ask God to lead you to pray for someone whom you have frequent contact with on a regular basis. God answers those prayers and softens people’s hearts and you will probably have the opportunity to give them the invitation, “come and see”.
